New Dj-Kicks

Also on the subject of electronic bit-crush beats, their is a new Dj-Kicks album comin out.

The Dj-Kicks albums are a series of DJ mix albums, mixed by various artists for the independent record label !K7 records.Everyone remembers the Hot Chip Dj-Kicks mix? Well the group has also put forth mixes by Four-Tet, Thievery Corporation, and many others, and now it seems that Burial will be added to this list with the release of their mix on June 23rd.

!K7 records gives use some insight into the mixes contents.

"We hear whisperings from the studio that he may treat his dearest dubstep, techno and even r'n'b tracks with his unique production style before mixing them with exclusive material...".

Downliners Sekt

Downliners Sekt are an experimental electronic noise group who believes in giving away their music for free (and not just temporarily, like Radiohead). Their reason:

WE BORED AS FUCK WITH THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

The group has a unique view on both music and life itself. Their dark distorted electronic beats are sometimes layered with dialogues that reflect society and evoke strong images. Downliners Sekt are true artist trying to break away from the shackles of the capitalist world that we live in today.

You can download their albums here from their website.

Wolf Parade "Call It A Ritual"

Wolf Parade has finally leaked the first song from their second album. The album itself still remains untitled but has been on everyone's mind since the release of the bands debut album, Apologies To The Queen Mary, which left the indie-rock scene jumping ecstatically over tracks such as "I'll Believe in Anything" and "Shine a Light". Though the album was a huge success the band does not feel the need to repeat themselves. Boecknar, the guitarist, explains their thinking surrounding the new album:

“After Apologies… we wrote about four or five new songs but we decided to throw them out because they sounded too much like what we’d already done. We could have easily made another Apologies… but what would have been the point?”

The band with what little time it had, trying to work around all the members side projects (Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, Handsome Furs, Swan Lake), set themselves up in Arcade Fire's church in Montreal where they recorded long streams of improvisation and then cut them into individual tracks. The album itself was subsequently mixed and engineered by drummer Arlen Thompson who's main goal was to limit the amount of effects added in the studio, thus giving the album a rawer sound than their previous record as well as offering the listener a chance to hear every discrete limb of the song. While Apologies to Queen Mary was the result of Boecknar and singer/keyboardist Spencer Krug messing around together, the new album strongly utilizes each members individual ability creating an unpampered yet rich cosmic sound. Matthew Derby writes on Sub-Pop records about this new experiment of Wolf Parade's:

"The legion of bearded, sweater-vested critics will want to file this album under ‘Prog Rock’ because it doesn’t offer up sugary cast-offs for the short-attention-span set..."

Well said. The album will be released June 17th on Sub-Pop even though it still remains nameless.

Soft Sunday Morning

I was just recently sent information pertaining to the the release of The Fairline Parkway's new album, A Memory of Open Spaces. The soft indie pop band is fresh out of SXSW and is a great listen for a lazy sunday morning, or a relaxed car ride as their single "Westward Bound" suggests. Though they tag themselves as indie pop their sound tells of a deep rooted admiration for folk rock legends such as Jeff Tweedy and Nick Drake. Make sure to give these guys a listen, the album comes out May 26 on Kora records.

No Age: Eraser EP

No Age

Its been just pass two years since experimental rock duo No Age played their first gig not five minutes from my house at The Smell in Downtown Los Angeles. The band has come a long way since then. With, Weirdo Rippers, out in stores, as well as their new Eraser-EP the band has become a formidable force in the LA punk rock scene. The Eraser-EP is a great sample of what we hope will come from the band's second full length record, Nouns, which will be released May 6th Sub-Pop records.

Thrushes

The Baltimore Thrushes reverence for Daniel Day-Lewis's performance in There Will Be Blood seems equal to my own with the headline on there myspace page being-"We drink your milkshake". This is reason enough for me to appreciate these shoegazeing indie rockers. However, if this isn't convincing for you, their album, Sun Come Undone, was well received and had many comparing their sound to that of My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus And Mary Chain, especially their song "Heartbeats" that actually borrows the iconic drumbeat of "Just Like Honey". That seems like solid enough ground at least to listen to the group. The Thrushes next release will be the remix album for "Heartbeats" which come out May 5th.

Deerhunter: Microcastle

Deerhunter is back from they're hiatus (like this blog) bringing with them a new album, Microcastle, and a camouflaged show in Brooklyn where they will perform the whole album beginning to end. Their website explains it all.

On the "Atlas Sound" show this Friday in Brooklyn

It will actually be a Deerhunter show. we are playing the new album "Microcastle" we have recorded with Nicolas Vernhes at the amazing Rare Book Room here in Brooklyn in its entirety. The reason we did not announce it as such is that a.) it was originally intended to be just an atlas sound show, but we have had such a great time recording with each other and rehearsing in the studio that we thought it would be fun to try and pull off an impromptu show with borrowed equipment. and b.) we weren't sure it would work out at first. I just want to say that we have been doing shows with Todd P for years now (he gave us shows before anyone would even think of talking to us.) Todd is the most upstanding and all-around dedicated dudes I've ever dealt with. He knows what he's doing and always keeps his priorities straight - putting on fun shows and treating bands well. In my opinion, as an outsider, this city is very lucky to have someone putting so much effort into putting on amazing shows. On another note: I seriously doubt the show is sold out and it probably won't sell out. I don't know much about the details but I'd encourage people to just chill and try and come out and have fun with us. Hope those who are interested will come check out the new songs, they are a lot different and we've been working really hard and having a great time. Respect to all.

Bradford"
