Best Of 2008

Here are my favorite albums of 2008; some of these might be predictable, but then again some of them might not. 2008 had a lot of great releases and I had quite a few ties when ranking these albums, but in the end I had to cut the ties. So, here are my five choice picks of the year. Go buy the albums and listen to them as a whole, for these albums are up here, partially, for their completeness.

Daniel Martin Moore

Daniel Martin Moore is a new artist, so new that "you've never heard of him before", according to Sub Pop. From Cold Spring, Kentucky, Daniel's soft folk has the same effect on me as most of Jon Brion's work ( listen to "Little Person"). His sound is very reminiscent of the feeling that settles over one when Christmas is at hand. His new album, Stray Age, is out now.

Future Islands

"When we got out to the water there was [sic] one to two feet walls of foam in parallel lines as far as we could see in both directions. I'd never seen anything like it and, of course, in our fragile states we saw it as some divine providence." - Sam Herring

Download:
Future Islands - Beach Foam

"Beach Foam" is a beautifully crafted song from North Carolina's Future Islands, reflecting on the loss of a loved one and all that accompanies such a twist fate. Sam Herring's belted vocals provide a raw emotional warmth to the group's resolute synth-punk bounce, pandering to the melodramatic side of our hearts. With swelling synth hooks ready to crash at every turn, Herring's voice rides the crest of every breaker that rears its head straight towards shore. Earlier this year the group released their record Wave Like Home.

Voice On Tape

Voice On Tape's hauntingly ethereal voice is like a howl to the moon, raising the hairs on the back of your neck with its otherworldly beauty. "Marry You When Yr Sleeping" will wash over you, fantastically blurring the line between nightmarish and heavenly. You can find out how to purchase his album, Bits & Pieces, here.

Grouper/City Center Split 7"

Grouper just released her beautifully dreamy debut, Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill, earlier this year, to much acclaim, and will now be releasing the exclusive new track "False Horizon" on a split 7" with her friend City Center, who I had not been aware of up until this point, yet now believe to be the savior of a dismal week with his "This Is How We See In The Dark". Though I haven't gotten to hear the finished version, which he reassures is "a lot more refined/better", this demo is enough to suffice. He writes on his blog,

"Liz's song is exclusive to this release, and recorded around the same time as her last amazing full-length "Dragging A Dead Deer Uphill". It's fucking mindblowing. My song is "This Is How We See In The Dark", which I wrote just for this release after checking out Liz's song and trying to write a counterpoint piece. I've been playing it live in every show since the end of the summer, so if you've seen me play at all, it might sound familiar."

"False Horizon" is currently posted at Grouper's myspace. There are only 500 copies available for purchase, so get on that. Visit City Center's blog for purchasing info.

Ty Segall

I've been waiting for an excuse to post about Ty Segall since I found out about him a month or two ago. Well, tonight he'll be swinging down from San Fransisco to play at The Smell and I recommend everyone, who has an ounce of appreciation for promiscuous psychedelic lo-fi garage rock, to go. This dude is extremely talented; he's a one man band who plays the drums with his feet while strumming and singing at the same time. Earlier this year he released his self titled LP (highly recommended) on Castle Face.

Animal Collective

Grizzly Bear, of all places, have posted an mp3 of Animal Collective's "Brother Sport" on their sporadic (but awesome) blog. I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the outcome of this much hyped about track for it is, in Ed's words, "Gorgeousness!". Merriweather Post Pavilion comes out January 20th, 2009. I can't wait to here the whole album.

Enfant Terrible

Thank you to Fuck You On A Friday for turning me onto Enfant Terrible, who are just beginning to spark interest in the blog world. The French trio specializes in producing house influenced electronic pop with dirty grooves and heavy base, in a similar vein as Crystal Castles. Except that "P. Clo"'s enchanting voice is nothing like Alice's, but reminds me slightly of Bjork's voice, due to the echoing effect employed in "Eagles", giving off a very feral, indigenous, quality despite all the processed sounds circling through out the song. I hope to see more material from these guys come 2009.

Nodzzz

Nodzzz is a post punk band from San Fransisco that has grown on me the more I listen to them; from their first single "I Don't Wanna (Smoke Marijuana)" to their now present ten song, self-titled debut, which was released today. Their songs are so infiltrated with child like jubilance and good nature that one fills the need to cheer them on even when the occasional whiny vocal cuts through the speakers. The lo-fi production of the tracks, which do not exceed the three minute mark, only adds to the sense of scrappy freewheelingness that suits their subject matter perfectly. The group played yesterday at The Part Time Punks Festival and will also be playing tonight with the Vivian Girls and Love Is All tonight at The Smell, with whom they will continue with on their west coast tour. A great line up, which is recommended for all to see.

No Age

It looks weird not seeing No Age headline Part Time Punks for they fit in perfectly with the line up, not to mention its at one of their home venues, but alas, the two will be playing tonight at the Gargoyle Club in St. Louis with Titus Andronicus and Soft Circle. There is however something to be heard of from the duo for those of us who are not in St. Louis, and that is their new Teen Creeps 7", released earlier this week, with the new track "Intimate Descriptions" as the b-side. The track serves as a good supporter to "Teen Creeps". With groany electronics that gradually build with the sparse clicking of sticks and the beating of a tom in the back round the song drops off suddenly leaving the last line to conclude alone, "So my mind just melts away". Which sort of helps to describe the anxious monotony the track inspires.

Clinic/DFA

James Murphy has done what he does best and funkified Clinic's latest single "Tomorrow" with enough synth thrashing, and rhythm shifts to make anybody happy. This is why we love DFA. Clinic's single, which will be released November 24th, will also include the new track "Hijack".

Warpaint

LA residents, Warpaint, just finished up their first EP, Exquisite Corpse, released by themselves. I'm not sure where to find it but have picked up this single, "Billy Holiday". These girls have a beautiful, slightly gritty, pop essence surrounding them, which kind of reminds me of my first reaction to Cat Power. Yet unlike Cat Power there are three of them with Dave Orlando ("King David") on drums. With all girls singing the song is filled out completely with beautiful, intertwining harmonies. You will be able to catch them at the Echo's Part Time Punks Festival on November 16th.

Zombie Nation

This is to late for Halloween but it will never the less spark interest. Zombie Nation (aka Jon Starlight, Splank, and one half of ZZT) will be releasing his Forza single November 10th with remixes by Fukkk Offf and Housemeister included. This should raise some eyebrows on the dance floor. The "Zombie Sound" exists as "funky, dirty grooves between electro and house, with bass-laden raw energy". And don't just take it from me.

Erol Alkan: “it's fuckin big”
David Dewaele/Soulwax: “electronic track of the year”
Isi/Digitalism: “this track is fucking awesome”

Thom Yorke

I've been thinking and believe that the metric song I posted yesterday was the perfect thing to hear after the election. It appears others were also ecstatic as well, including Thom Yorke, who put up this remix on Dead Air Space.

"in celebration of nov 5th
jonnys burthday
amid bonfire and fireworks in the UK
and the dawn of a new era in politics in the USA
i humbly donate a remix of harrowdown hill that was finished ages ago during the band webcasts,

James Murphy + Hockey Night = ?

James Murphy has a new band and they are hopefully going to be releasing material in the near future on DFA (next year). According to Rodrigo Davies of the BBC:

"Murphy said the new band had been formed by Scott Wells and Paul Sprangers, two former members of Minneapolis band Hockey Night. During the recording, Murphy has been playing some bass and LCD’s Pat Mahoney doing some drumming. He added that some of the members of DFA act Hercules and Love Affair are also contributing."

The record is "a rock record, a classic rock record," says Murphy who is currently mixing the album and will not, along with Mahoney, accompany the group in their live performances. Shucks. Oh well, I can't wait to hear whats being cooked up by Murphy in the studio right now.

Deerhunter/ Atlas Sound

Bradford Cox is a busy man. With his Halloween contributions posted nearly a week in advance, the lead singer of Deerhunter's next project, the remix of Stereolab's "Neon Beanbag", has already hit the web. The remix is under the subtitle "Southern Baptist" due to the preaching heard at the beginning of the track.

Also, on Halloween Deerhunter gave away an exclusive cassette tape of their Platts Eyott Session, at their Microcastle release party. "The idea behind the session was in memory of John Peel and his famous radio 1 sessions. [Thus] Bradford Cox recorded the songs like a continuous stream of consciousness; the session is intended to be listened to in order and uninterrupted."

"The On Platts Eyott Island Session will be released on 200 strictly limited edtion cassettes, 100 orange, 100 pink. The orange are ONLY available at Deerhunter's Halloween show in Atlanta, Georgia. For a chance to win one of the pink cassettes," as well as stream it, click here.

Telepathe

The much hyped about Telepathe earlier this month released their latest single "Devils Trident", which definitely carries the club vibe from their Chrome's On It EP, but with a more ruminative feel, instilled by the spoken word lyrics. Another synth piece melodramatically reflecting on love and loss. With such lyrics as "Tears in my hand, Tears in my hand" being repeated, the song seems to dance on the border between a ballad of self pity and a rallying cry for the speaker ("I won't go, I won't go"). Yet the lyrics are not the highlight of the song, merely a facet of Telepathe's well produced sound. With the help of TV On The Radio's guitarist and keyboardist, David Sitek, Telepathe does a great job of mixing at least three distinct vocal tracks with glittery keyboards and a heavy layer of synth produced rhythms that seem to grow piece by piece as the song progresses. Also included on the single is the b-side, "Lights Go Down".

Halloween//Weird Tapes

I think that if electro pop had to pick a holiday it would choose Halloween as its mascot, or Valentines Day which I find equally if not more creepy (maybe this is just attributed with bad past experiences). Anyway this post is going to be the first cataloging some of the most recent electro pop (broad category) out puts that attribute to Halloween, leading up to the holiday itself.

First up is Weird Tapes, who is known only by the alias he has given himself on the blog from which he posts his songs, along with fellow artist Memory Cassette. Both are an off shoot of the group Hail Social. Weird Tapes newest track, "The Talking Dead", was posted with the above art work and is the reason I decided to focus on this list before the night of horrors. Weird Tapes has a fair share of haunting space tracks posted that are all quite danceable (Get Religion EP). With "The Talking Dead", Weird Tapes has taken a step farther into the video game electronics. Make sure to check out the blog and download all that is offered.

Used To Be

"Used To Be" certainly continues Beach House's catalogue of dreamy pop folk. I however can not shake the thought that the song slightly resembles the vocal melody of Fleet Foxes' "Your Protector", which is also backed by someone counting eighth notes with a tambourine. The b-side of the single is a four-track demo of the song "Apple Orchard" from their first album. In all I agree with Marc Hogan of PFK that "it's not too different from what the Baltimore duo used to be just this year on the gorgeously supine Devotion, with a little more distortion."

Alien In A Garbage Dump

Eric Copeland's new warped tape looping track "Alien In A Garbage Dump" sounds a bit like a nightmare or if, while you were sleeping, someone injected you with LSD and placed an antenna on your head causing you to pick up signals from the world around you.

The track does pose similarities to Steve Reich's "Come Out", due to the heavy rotation of a track with man saying "just don't do it" over and over, as well other tapes of spoken word phrases. Yet supporting and surrounding all the spliced voice tracks and warped vocals are police sirens, honking horns, the banging of trash can lids, and various synth effects with a strong beat sporadically employed in the mix. Which, all could possibly be the sounds that an alien might hear if he was having a bad trip in a garbage dump and was picking up radio signals. This loopes back to my beginning theory.

Boneless

Panda Bear's new remix of The Notwist's Boneless, certainly is a more tropical take than the original. Both are very different and I can't figure out which one I like better. The original is beautifully melancholy while its rework is sunny and cheerful, with ukulele plucking, shakers, wave crashes, and whimsical sighing.

E Talking

I find Soulwax a huge influence on the dance scene and I have to say I am so tired of hearing about their Kids remix. It is mediocre in comparison to their other Nite Versions. Here is my favorite, and just watch as your awe for their kids remix pales in comparison to this dazzling disco club reworking of E Talking. The title of their movie, Part Of The Weekend Never Dies, refers back to the original of this song. Also take the time to watch the brilliant music video that accompanies the song.

Tobacco

Yesterday I was sent an email detailing Tobacco, the solo project of analog-adoring space psychsters, Black Moth Super Rainbow's lead singer and his upcoming album, Fucked up Friends. Tobacco's sound definitely still resides in the same psychedelia electronic vein as Black Moth Super Rainbow but relies more on hip-hop roots. I for one never found myself a hip-hop fan, as you can tell by the posts on this blog, but am still able to get a high off of it sometimes. And anyway the over all sound of the album really relies on big beats mixed with spacey trance. Fucked up Friends is in stores

Final Fantasy

Owen Pallet has always been some one who's music has seemed to transcend beauty and his two EPs have been a long time coming since the release of his debut album, He Poos Clouds, in 2006, with a full length coming sometime in 2009. Pallet's first EP, Spectrum, 14th Century, released Sep. 30th is all his own composition, conducted with the help of Beirut while helping them orchestrate their own album, Flying Club Cup. "The Butcher", the albums most pop friendly track sums up everything we love about Final Fantasy: ringing strings, and a rhythmic piano all beautifully orchestrated alongside flourishing percussion and choir like bird chirps.

Pallet's second EP, Plays to Please, soon to be released on Oct. 21st, is a collaborative project with a number of musicians including Andrew Bird. You can leave it up to these two to start turning kids heads towards orchestral music. The EP is a tribute to Alex Lukashevsky's songwriting and his band Deep Dark United. Their songs are hazy and perfectly written, so much so that Pallet could not control himself in prescribing the big band treatment he felt they deserved. Both expressing their love for the likes of Loius Prima and Marvin Gaye, the two transformed the previously caustic rock songs into stylish orchestral ballads with a sharpened edge that could easily be seen being played in the witty, socially critical ballroom scene of a movie.

Small Sur

My ride to go surfing occasionally sleeps in, leaving me, without a car, to spend the rest of my day how I may. I think I have mentioned how much I love the California coast before in posts. And on hearing "Sea Stones" by Small Sur I had an instant flashback to cold water, wetsuits, sunsets, and rocky beaches.

“Big Sur is the California that men dreamed of years ago, this is the Pacific that Balboa looked at from the Peak of Darien, this is the face of the earth as the Creator intended it to look.” - Henry Miller

Many writers (Kerouac and Hunter S. Thompson to name a few) have been set upon by Big Sur's ruggedness and beauty, and it seems no surprise that these downtempo folksters have also found a canvas from which to sketch their drawn out guitar melodies and soaring vocal harmonies. Big Sur's wooded coastline kissed by fog fits well against Bob Keal's hushed lyrics, and Julianne Nelson's,Scott Dennison, and Austin Stahl's echoing voices in the background.

Their album, We Live in Houses Made of Wood, was released this past august through Tender Loving Empire, who compare Bob Keal's lyrics to "Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and the childlike wonder found in the assorted scribblings of Little Wings’ frontman Kyle Field." A remark that is true but does not exactly convey the sense nostalgia and hope that flows from We Live in Houses Made of Wood. I would point the reader in the direction of a more down-tempo Fleet Foxes.

Fan Death//Erol Alkan

Remember when I said that Erol Alkan was interested in Fan Death? Well Erol is now releasing this extended dub of "Veronica's Veil" next to the original for the groups first single. (via. HaveFunClub)

Download:
Fan Death - Veronica's Veil (Erol Alkan's Extended Rework)

Also (I find this funny) Fan Death is according to Wikipedia: "a South Korean urban legend which states that an electric fan, if left running overnight in a closed room, can cause the death (by suffocation, poisoning, or hypothermia) of those inside. Fans manufactured and sold in Korea are equipped with a timer switch that turns them off after a set number of minutes, which users are frequently urged to set when going to sleep with a fan on."

I recommend reading this interesting article by Aquarium Drunkard on the soundtrack of the 80's porn film Deep Throat. I have come to really like one of the songs and am thinking about getting the whole album. Also all the artists are unknown.

Megapuss

This past June Devendra Banhart and Priestbird’s Greg Rogove made their debut appearance as Megapuss at the hammer museum in LA with Devandra wearing a skirt made of plastic dicks and Greg in a summery man dress. The group also includes the Strokes' Fabrizio Moretti. Megapuss was inadvertently formed when the Devendra and Greg where touring together in their separate groups trying to pass the time away backstage. Banhart says, "Before a show, we'd have fifteen minutes to get in the zone. So the plan was to have a finished song written in fifteen minutes each night." Banhart also reassures us that this isn't just him spit balling songs at us. "Usually, a lot of my songs are based on stuff from my shitty diary. Megapuss is a lot more fun." Its true. Surfing, Megapuss' debut album, is more pop oriented than Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain, with out loosing the hippie folk aspiration. The album also contains a constant feeling of jocularity, and it is advised to take each song (especially "Duck People", "Mister Meat") with a grain of salt.

Passion Pit

I see that this is catchy and why it would appeal to some, but I feel like Passion Pit is just another hype band ready to decay under the scrutiny of time. Some of these songs do contain quality pop, like the single "Sleepyhead" (really catchy). However the song "Better Things", which has been commemorated by some, spells out my reaction in the first lines, "You're driving me crazy/You're driving me mad". My teeth get set on edge when hit with high, whiny electronics and equally irritating voices. Here is the groups first single off the Chunk of Change EP.

Snake Flower 2

Snake Flower 2's debut album, Renegade Daydream, preaches the way of dusty highways, dialing up the volume, and flooring it to ninety just as well as The Stones or Steppenwolf. These lo-fi San Fransisco rockers could give any teenager the motivation to liberate themselves from the confides of society as well as any playing in the sixties. Matthew Melton, the lead singer and guitarist of the trio, says that Renegade Daydream is basically ""the first batch of songs I wrote after I escaped from the South (Memphis)."

Back in his formidable years Matthew Melton, grew up playing in various garage punk bands alongside others of the scene like Jay Reatard, who Mathew Melton later came to photograph with blood dripping down his chin for the album cover of Blood Visions. On making his way towards his "illusive California dream" Matthew left everything and moved west. Surrounded on every side by the sense of "new", Matthew forged Snake Flower (1) and with it his first romance on the west coast with fellow band member "bunny". This later fell through and after their first tour the band split. But the group was able to converge back together again (Snake Flower 2), minus "bunny", and Matthew set to writing about "the world-weary stature gained throughout the course of a firey succession of trials and errors."

MGMT x Chemical Brothers

Well it seems that the Chemical Brothers will be producing the next MGMT album, and its going to be a double. Andrew VanWyngarden (MGMT) told NME, "We'll experiment with them to create a different sound. It won't be dance music." The first side of the album will be pop music, the other psychedelia. The Chemical brothers weren't the first guys I would consider for this job but apparently they loved Oracular Spectacular, and have been talking with MGMT via. email since. MGMT also sound excited about the team up, vouching for the electronic duo, "They've collaborated with people like Noel Gallagher before and they have this psychedelic side to them, so we'll find a common ground." Hope this works out.

I also hope this is not the last version we get to hear of this remix.

Blitzen Trapper

When I first heard "Furr" I thought of Dylan (harmonica sealed the deal), and when I heard "Black River Killer" I thought of Tom Petty. I have to say though that the vibes don't stop there. I keep hearing the influence of different rock and folk legends every time I listen to Blitzen Trapper, and I find it pretty funny when I read that their previous album, Wild Mountain Nation, is heavily compared with Pavement. Frankly these guys just can't lose. Though these influences are recognizable, Blitzen Trapper is not just rehashing the same sounds of a previous generation (like Dr. Dog's Fate). No, these hardy Portlanders have their own story to tell. I compare them to Dylan only due to their lyrical beauty, which offers much to dissect after the first listen. Their sound is fertile with that down to earth feeling that northwesterners can inspire.

Chad Vangaalen

Chad Vangaalen is a new find for me. I was first introduced through his song, "Echo Train" (great), off Infiniheart about a week ago. And have been meaning to pick up the album ever since, but have now found out that he will be releasing his third album, Soft Airplane, through Subpop & Flemish Eye and just wanted to put up word because every song I've heard has been fabulous in its own way.
From what I've found out, he does everything from animation and painting (album cover) to extreme sports on Letterman. His songs are recorded on an old tape machine in his basement with a quirkiness and freeness that is expressed in everything he does. Through out Soft Airplane, he incorporates a mix of guitars, synths, and any other instruments he can acquire. The end product is an incredible collection of acoustic pop, lo-fi synth pop, as well as some playful and sharp (sometimes sad and eerie) song writing.

High Places

From small speck of stardust to wondrously sentient
Revolving and spinning in space
Waking and sleeping and yielding to gravity
It starts to show on your face

Millions of forces of physics and providence
Teamed up and brought us all here
Waking and sleeping and yielding to gravity
Pointless to measure in years

Out in the desert your thoughts are as clear as the stars
You feel golden
You're billion year old carbon.

High Places - From Stardust to Sentience

This is High Places. And like their lyrics portray, they write beautiful spacey surf trance. High Places self-titled debut will be available September 23rd through Thrill Jockey. I was late in the game to discover them, missing their 03/07 - 09/07 comp, but now having seen them live and listening to what they have to offer, I have been captured by their eloquent spoken word lyrics ("You feel Golden") whispered over spacey electronic rhythms, that almost feel tribal.

Of Montreal

I have to say I've always cracked a smile at the sense of jubilation that I feel when I listen to the gaiety and playfulness heard within all of Of Montreal's hullicantory rave-ups. "Nonpareil of Favor", off of Skeletal Lamping, is no exception. Kevin Barnes' wit and charm it seems is not at all suppressed when it comes to digging up the skeleton's in his closet. Kevin Barnes addressing the title said, "This record is my attempt to bring all of my puzzling, contradicting, disturbing, humorous...fantasies, ruminations and observations to the surface, so that I can better dissect and understand their reason for being in my head." While the opening track "Nonpareil of Favor" is more of a thank you note for being accepted, "St.Exquisite's Confessions" is more along the lines of the humorously disturbing, with the eye opening first line "I'm so tired of sucking the dick of this cruel, cruel, city", said and performed with that glamorous theatricality that is the essence of Of Montreal's appeal and genius.

land of talk

You remember how a few days ago I mentioned that Elizabeth Powell was a great asset to Broken Social Scene's performance. Well her band Land of Talk just released the first single from their upcoming album Some Are Lakes on Saddle Creek Records. The album is due out October 7th and it seems the same pop-rock sound is going to translate from their first EP, Applause Cheer Boo Hiss, into their debut record. Saddle Creek writes of the album "It’s simply a continuation of the internal conversation Powell has been holding with herself since she began this musical lark, more than a decade ago, with a 14 year-old’s creaky-voiced acuteness, spouting the uncomfortable truths of a woman thrice her years and many times more guarded."

“It started at a summer lake / a sentence and a name / If only for a moment’s sake/ We called it and it came...”
